About University of Hawaii Manoa

The University of Hawaii Manoa was founded in 1907, as a land grant college which was focused on agriculture and mechanical arts, being renamed in 1912 as the College of Hawaii and relocated on its present site.


UH Manoa is known today as a public university located in Manoa, Honolulu, being the flagship campus of the University of Hawaii system. The campus is located approximately 3 miles from the downtown area and 1 mile from Waikiki and Ala Moana, occupying the eastern half of Manoa Valley and housing an enrollment of more than 50 000 students from which over 40 000 are undergraduate.


It is offering students bachelor degrees in more than 80 fields of study, same number of master degrees, over 50 doctoral degrees, as well as numerous other undergraduate and graduate programs, through 19 different schools and colleges, including the School of Earth Science and Technology, School of Architecture, College of Arts and Humanities and Shidler College of Business.


The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (men's teams) and Hawaii Rainbow Wahine (women's teams), the athletic teams that represent the university in collegiate championship, participate in the NCAA Division I, being the only Hawaiian educational institution to do so, also competing in the Western Athletic Conference. Both of the teams have won various titles over the years, being notable for their highly-ranked men's and women's volleyball, basketball, baseball and football programs.

Facts & Short history of Honolulu

Honolulu is the most populated city in the U.S. State of Hawaii, having a population estimated at a number of more than 900 000 inhabitants (2008). "Honolulu" means "sheltered bay" or "place of shelter", and it referrers to as an urban area that is located on the beautiful island of Oahu.


Archaeological evidences suggest that the first inhabitants of the area were the Polynesian migrants. Artifacts were found on the site where Honolulu stands today, certifying the existence of a Polynesian settlement in the 12th century.


Despite its turbulent history, Honolulu remained the largest city, capital and main seaport and airport of the Hawaii Islands, growing over the years into a major tourist destination, offering visitors beautiful surroundings, amazing attractions and several magnificent beaches.
